The Big Steel

The government claims fiscal prudence while gutting social support, yet props up a dying steel industry without offering a bold, green vision for the future. If we’re going to spend public money, why not use it to reinvent steel—sustainably and strategically?

THE GREAT BRITISH PATCH-JOB: NOW WITH MORE RUST!

Ah yes, nothing screams “21st-century innovation” like duct-taping a post-war steel plant and calling it economic strategy. While nurses queue at food banks and kids show up to school hungry, the government’s masterstroke of industrial policy is to shovel public cash into a blast furnace running on fumes and nostalgia. Fiscal responsibility? More like Victorian cosplay—top hats, soot, and all.

If you’re going to bankroll Big Steel, at least do it with some panache. Imagine: a gleaming green facility powered by hydrogen, exporting low-emission steel and not just excuses. But no, why dream big when you can cling to an industrial relic like it’s your nan’s teapot? We could lead the world in clean manufacturing, but we’ll settle for reheating the leftovers of empire. Bon appétit.
