Stephanie Turner is stepping away from her USA Fencing career after being dealt a 12-month probation for kneeling in protest of a trans opponent.
Statement of Support for Stephanie Turner
I stand in full support of Stephanie Turner as she steps away from her USA Fencing career. Her decision to protest reflects a growing concern shared by many athletes around the world: the need for fairness, clarity, and open conversation in competitive sports.
Stephanie’s kneeling was not an act of hate or exclusion—it was a call to recognize the importance of biological realities in athletic competition. For decades, men’s and women’s sports have existed separately not out of division, but out of recognition of physiological differences that directly affect performance. That foundation deserves protection, not punishment.
This does not mean denying anyone their identity or dignity. Transgender individuals have every right to express who they are and to participate in sports. But fairness also means acknowledging when those differences create imbalances in the field of play.
Stephanie’s protest was about asking an important question: How do we preserve fairness while respecting inclusion? That’s not a question to silence. It’s one to face head-on—with courage, empathy, and common sense.
One possible path forward is the creation of open or mixed classifications where all athletes, regardless of identity, can compete on equal footing. This would preserve fairness for women while offering a competitive space for others who don’t fit neatly into existing categories.
Stephanie deserves respect, not retribution—for raising a voice in defense of competitive integrity. Silencing that voice only delays the real work we need to do: having the tough conversations with open minds and honest hearts.
