The Financial Reporting Council is relocating its London office from Canary Wharf to the City, shaving a few miles off the map but apparently adding an average six minutes to workers’ journeys. Rather than risk morale plummeting under this brutal new regime, the FRC is offering financial support to cushion the blow — proving once and for all that in some corners of the economy, “hardship” is a very flexible term.
🥀 Perspective, Please
This is happening in the same country where rural bus routes are disappearing, train tickets cost more than short-haul flights, and commuters in the North would sacrifice a toe for only six minutes of extra travel time. Meanwhile, in the glossy skyscraper bubble, six minutes is now a crisis worthy of cash handouts.
It’s not that small inconveniences don’t matter — they do. But when workers on minimum wage routinely travel an hour or more each way, without so much as a “sorry” from their employer, the optics here are… let’s just say, not great.
⏳ Time Is Money — But Whose?
The FRC might argue it’s about respecting employees’ time, and fair enough. But if we’re putting a price on minutes, what’s six minutes worth to a nurse finishing a 12-hour shift, or a delivery driver on zero-hours pay? That’s the awkward part — once you start compensating one group for their lost time, you shine a very bright light on all the others who get nothing.
