The Clockmaker’s Choice

In a workshop crowded with ticking hearts of brass and gears, the clockmaker built a timepiece that could measure more than hours. This clock split every moment in two: what could be seen and what could not.

When he wound it, the shop filled with a strange rhythm—half the gears spun with golden light, casting warmth across the benches, while the other half turned in cool shadow, quiet and still.

Apprentices asked, “Why not let light fill it all?”

He answered, “Because time without shadow burns too quickly, and shadow without light drowns. It is their division that makes the measure true.”

And so the people who wore his clocks learned something new: to greet the morning as gift, and to let the night settle like rest upon their shoulders.

Light teaches joy, but darkness teaches rest; wisdom lives in knowing both.”
