The Prime Ministerโs response to Trumpโs tariff saber-rattling was, in a word, meh. A fog of โdialogue,โ โongoing discussions,โ and โworking with partnersโ floated over a moment that demanded a firm national spine. What we got instead was Whitehall poetry about โconstructive engagementโ โ which might reassure a civil servant polishing their inbox, but to the average citizen watching trade war clouds roll in, it sounds a lot like stalling.
๐งโConstructive Dialogueโ Served With a Side of Consequence-Free Surrender
Thereโs a certain type of language that wafts out of Downing Street like steam from a lukewarm teabag โ phrases so sterilized, they couldnโt threaten a hamster. โTariffs are wrong,โ said the Prime Minister, with all the fiery conviction of someone apologising for stepping on your foot in Tesco. No mention of retaliation. No mention of cost. Justโฆ a politely worded shrug.
Meanwhile, Washington is pressure-testing like a gym bro flexing in a mirror. Theyโre not waiting for gentle disapproval โ theyโre looking for the flinch. And the UK flinched.
This isnโt diplomacy. Itโs placation masquerading as poise. While exporters hold their breath and households brace for price hikes, weโre being fed a steady diet of procedural oatmeal. โWeโre in discussions.โ Great. Can we eat those?
And letโs not forget the emotional vacuum of this entire performance. Where was the fight? Where was the moment of national reassurance that someone โ anyone โ in charge had a game plan beyond โwe really hope the bad thing doesnโt happenโ?
A stronger leader wouldnโt yell. Theyโd draw a line.
๐ง Calm is great. But calm without consequences? Thatโs just silence in a nicer suit.

Are we really okay with a Prime Minister whose best defense is hoping Trump gets distracted by his own reflection? Shouldnโt we expect a bit more backbone when British jobs and industries are in the crosshairs? Drop your thoughts in the blog comments โ not just on social.
