Some parents are eager to slam the brakes on their kids’ internet access—but maybe, just maybe, we’re pointing fingers in the wrong direction. What if, instead of micromanaging screen time with the zeal of a 1950s librarian, we asked the platforms themselves to take some actual responsibility? Until social media giants can prove they know what young users shouldn’t see, why are we acting like Mum and Dad are the only ones who need a permission slip?

👨‍👩‍👧 The Great Blame Swap: Parents vs Platforms

Let’s be clear: parents should be involved in their kids’ digital lives. But this trend of ramping up household internet policing—installing spyware, blocking apps, time-limiting every tap—feels a bit like trying to fix a leaky dam with a teabag.

Meanwhile, the tech titans are lounging in their algorithm palaces, pretending they just can’t tell when a 13-year-old is scrolling through a feed full of violence, misogyny, or crypto scams. Sorry, is this the same industry that can serve me an ad for shoes I whispered about in my sleep?

Why should kids lose autonomy while platforms remain lawless amusement parks with age gates made of wet cardboard? If Big Tech can’t even figure out how to separate a 15-year-old from a 35-year-old pretending to be a teen influencer, should they really be the ones profiting off the clicks?

Here’s a radical thought: until the platforms get their act together and enforce proper content boundaries, maybe we should stop treating parents like they’re the digital gatekeepers of the apocalypse—and start looking at the companies making billions off chaos.

🧠 Challenges 🧠

Why are we wagging the finger at parents when platforms are the ones hosting the party with no bouncer? Is clamping down on home Wi-Fi the solution, or just a smokescreen for regulatory cowardice?
