🛒🤦♂️🚨In today’s upside-down retail reality, stopping a thief might not earn you a thank you… it might earn you a P45. Because nothing says “valued employee” quite like being shown the door for trying to protect the very goods you’re paid to look after.
You really couldn’t script it better.
🛍️ Hero to Zero in One Shift
So here we are. An employee sees someone helping themselves to unpaid shopping, steps in to stop it—and instead of a pat on the back, gets handed their marching orders.
Because apparently, the real problem isn’t the shoplifting… it’s the staff member who noticed it.
You’ve got to admire the logic:
- Thief walks out → inconvenience
- Employee intervenes → disciplinary issue
Brilliant. Absolutely airtight.
It sends a crystal-clear message to every worker on the shop floor:
“See something? Say nothing. Do nothing. Definitely don’t act on it.”
Because heaven forbid you actually try to protect the business—you might accidentally break a policy written by someone who’s never chased a trolley full of unpaid steaks out the door. 🥩💨
🎭 Corporate Logic: Protect the Rules, Not the Reality
Of course, the official line will be about “safety,” “procedure,” and “liability.” And yes—those things matter.
But when the outcome is punishing initiative while effectively shrugging at theft, it starts to look less like risk management and more like surrender wrapped in corporate language.
Because what’s the long-term plan here?
Let it happen.
Write it off.
Blame “shrinkage.”
And quietly discourage anyone from stepping out of line—even if that line leads straight to the exit with stolen goods.
Meanwhile, the one person who actually gave a damn is now updating their CV.
