London: The City That’s Open… But Only If You Knock First

🚪🔒Welcome to The Strand—once a proud artery of London life, now a sort of medieval village where shops keep their doors locked and customers must knock to be granted entry. Forget “open for business.” It’s “open… if we decide you’re not here to rob us.” What a message for the tourists: “Come to London! The capital where the shops operate like speakeasies.” 🍸

🛍️ From World-Class Shopping to Knock-and-Wait

Yes, rampant shoplifting has turned staff into bouncers. Londoners now enjoy the thrilling experience of pressing their noses against the glass, hoping a weary cashier deems them worthy of entry. Knightsbridge had Harrods. The Strand has “ding-dong, please let me buy toothpaste.”

And of course, Sadiq Khan gets the blame. His critics have labelled it “lawless London.” Which begs the question: when did the capital stop being a global metropolis and become a budget Gotham, complete with a mayor accused of incompetence instead of a Batman swooping in to save the day? 🦇

⚽ Sack the Mayor, Like a Football Manager

The rant writes itself: if a football manager tanks a season, they’re booted out. If a CEO drives a company into the ground, they’re gone. But in politics? Nah—apparently you get a second term, a fat pension, and a Netflix documentary. Imagine Khan explaining to the board at Tesco: “Yes, shoplifting has tripled, but look at our cycle lanes!” 🚲

For too long, Mayors and MPs skate by on charisma, slogans, and industrial-strength excuses. They promise the earth, then deliver potholes and paperwork. And when things go wrong, they hide behind committees, consultations, and carefully worded press releases that say precisely nothing.

In any other industry, that’s called “being fired.” In politics, it’s called “re-election.”

🔥 Challenges 🔥

So what’s worse: a mayor accused of incompetence, or a political system that lets them fail upwards without consequence? Should London be run like a football club—lose the dressing room, and you’re out? Or would that just give us revolving-door mayors with shorter careers than Chelsea managers?

👇 Comment, like, and share your takes. Should Khan be sacked mid-season? Should politicians face actual performance reviews? Or do we just keep knocking on locked shop doors until the end of time?

The sharpest replies will make it into the next issue. 📝🎯
