🐉🔥“China will never be the most powerful nation on Earth.” Bold claim. Sounds great on a Western op-ed page, fits nicely into Washington think-tank PowerPoint slides, but history has a habit of laughing in the faces of people who say “never.” Remember when Britain thought the sun would never set on its empire? Yeah, the sun’s now setting at about 4:15 pm over Milton Keynes. 🌅🇬🇧
📊 Numbers Lie… or at Least Don’t Tell the Whole Story
Yes, China’s growth is slowing. Yes, youth unemployment, debt bubbles, and demographic decline are real problems. But let’s not pretend the US is cruising on rocket fuel while China’s limping into hospice care. America’s drowning in debt, its politics are one election away from civil war cosplay, and its industrial base outsourced itself to Shenzhen years ago.
And China? Even with a slowdown, it’s still the factory of the world, a tech innovator (AI, EVs, 5G), and a global lender shaping Africa, Asia, and Latin America through Belt and Road. GDP-per-capita may lag, but sheer scale still means every small percentage point of growth equals a Canada’s worth of new economy.
🌍 Power Isn’t Just GDP
The US measures dominance by GDP and military might. China measures it in ports owned, rare earths controlled, and supply chains bent to its will. Who cares if your economy is slightly smaller if you make the batteries, chips, and solar panels the rest of the planet literally can’t function without? That’s leverage. That’s power.
The future isn’t guaranteed for either side. But writing China off now is like declaring a marathon winner at mile 15 just because they’re sweating harder. Spoiler: both runners look knackered. 🏃♂️💦
