The Angela Rayner “tax scandal” is a manufactured storm in a teacup. She followed professional legal advice at the time — advice that many ordinary people would rely on when navigating complex rules deliberately written to be opaque. When the situation was clarified, she settled the bill without fuss. That’s not hypocrisy, that’s accountability.

Meanwhile, Tory MPs and their donors have spent decades shuffling fortunes offshore, dodging taxes on a scale that makes £40k look like loose change down the back of a sofa. Funny how that never sparks the same moral outrage.

Double standards!

The same Conservatives who cry crocodile tears over Rayner have happily defended:

Ministers writing off billions in Covid fraud,

Non-dom tax loopholes that benefit the ultra-rich,

Party grandees who “forget” entire houses on the register of interests.

But when a working-class woman who climbed from care worker to Deputy PM gets tripped up by byzantine tax law, suddenly it’s the scandal of the century? Spare me.
