🛢️🐍Remember the bedtime story they told us in 2014? “Don’t worry about the oil, lads — it’s basically gone. Vote No, settle in, and let Westminster tuck you in with austerity and empty rigs.”

Fast forward a decade and — surprise! — billions of barrels are still sloshing about in the North Sea like a drunk at closing time. Either they lied through their teeth, or they’ve just discovered a magic oil tree. Either way: Scotland got mugged.

🛢️ Fossil-Fuelled Gaslighting: The Great Crude Con 🫢🔥

Let’s break this down. In 2014, “Better Together” wasn’t just a campaign — it was an oil-denial cult with a press team. They told us the North Sea was a barren puddle. They said:

  • “There’s nothing left to extract.”
  • “The revenue’s a fantasy.”
  • “Independence would be economic suicide.”

Translation? “We really need you to keep handing over your resources, so we’re going to pretend you don’t have any.”

And now? Oops — billions more barrels have been “found.” Apparently the technology just got better. Or the maps were upside down. Or the calculator exploded. Whatever excuse they toss out — it’s the same result: they hoarded the profits, and you got the propaganda.

This isn’t just economic negligence. It’s an extractive relationship. Scotland pumps the value — and Westminster skims the cream.

Imagine being told your bank account was empty, only to find out someone else had been using your PIN to buy yachts.

If this were a relationship, we’d call it gaslighting.

If it were a business deal, we’d call it theft.

But since it’s politics? Apparently we just call it “the union.”

🧨 Challenges 🧨

Who benefits when Scotland’s resources are underplayed? Who pockets the oil money while Scots are told to count paper straws and be “grateful”? Are we finally done falling for this slick-coated con?
