Ā š¢ļøšRemember the bedtime story they told us in 2014? āDonāt worry about the oil, lads ā itās basically gone. Vote No, settle in, and let Westminster tuck you in with austerity and empty rigs.ā
Fast forward a decade and ā surprise! ā billions of barrels are still sloshing about in the North Sea like a drunk at closing time. Either they lied through their teeth, or theyāve just discovered a magic oil tree. Either way: Scotland got mugged.
š¢ļø Fossil-Fuelled Gaslighting: The Great Crude Con š«¢š„
Letās break this down. In 2014, āBetter Togetherā wasnāt just a campaign ā it was an oil-denial cult with a press team. They told us the North Sea was a barren puddle. They said:
- āThereās nothing left to extract.ā
- āThe revenueās a fantasy.ā
- āIndependence would be economic suicide.ā
Translation? āWe really need you to keep handing over your resources, so weāre going to pretend you donāt have any.ā
And now? Oops ā billions more barrels have been āfound.ā Apparently the technology just got better. Or the maps were upside down. Or the calculator exploded. Whatever excuse they toss out ā itās the same result: they hoarded the profits, and you got the propaganda.
This isnāt just economic negligence. Itās an extractive relationship. Scotland pumps the value ā and Westminster skims the cream.
Imagine being told your bank account was empty, only to find out someone else had been using your PIN to buy yachts.
If this were a relationship, weād call it gaslighting.
If it were a business deal, weād call it theft.
But since itās politics? Apparently we just call it āthe union.ā
š§ØĀ ChallengesĀ š§Ø
Who benefits when Scotlandās resources are underplayed? Who pockets the oil money while Scots are told to count paper straws and be āgratefulā? Are we finally done falling for this slick-coated con?
