For years we’ve been told that multiculturalism is about inclusion. Different cultures. Different faiths. Different traditions. Living side by side while respecting each other’s choices.

So why does it increasingly feel as though “inclusion” means removing one group’s choices to accommodate another’s?

In selected Subway stores, pork products have disappeared entirely in favour of halal-only menus. Subway says it’s responding to local demand, and as a private business it’s entitled to do exactly that. But many customers are asking a reasonable question: where does that leave everyone else?

🍽️Inclusion Shouldn’t Mean Exclusion

The issue isn’t halal food. People should be able to buy food that aligns with their religious beliefs. That’s part of living in a free society.

The concern is what happens when the solution is to eliminate existing choices instead of broadening the menu where possible.

If multiculturalism means respecting diversity, surely that means offering options for everyone—not replacing one customer’s preferences with another’s.

For many people, a ham sandwich isn’t a political statement or a religious symbol. It’s just lunch.

When familiar products quietly disappear, some customers feel they’re no longer being catered for. Whether or not that was the intention, that’s the perception.

Businesses have every right to make commercial decisions, and customers have every right to decide whether to keep spending their money there.

That’s how markets work.

🔥Challenges🔥

Should national chains adapt their menus to local demand, even if it means removing products that other customers want? Or should inclusion mean expanding choice rather than replacing it?
