Scotland is a proudly multicultural nation, so naturally many of us will be cheering for the underdog—DR Congo. It’s not because we’ve got anything against England. Perish the thought! It’s certainly not because of centuries of political arguments, or because some folk still joke that England “stole Scotland’s oil” and spent the proceeds propping up the Treasury before allegedly blowing the rest down the pub. 🍻🛢️

No, none of that.

It’s simply because we’re a multicultural country, and supporting the underdog is what decent multicultural football fans do… at least that’s the story we’re sticking to. 😏

Let’s face it, every tournament brings out the same annual debate. England expects Scotland to become honorary English supporters for a fortnight, while plenty of Scots look around the fixture list thinking, “Who are England playing? Right then… come on them!” ⚽😂

This year, it’s DR Congo’s turn to receive an unexpected surge of Scottish goodwill. Not because of bitterness—absolutely not. It’s simply an appreciation for diversity, international friendship and giving the smaller side a fighting chance. Pure coincidence that it happens whenever England are involved. 😉

Football rivalry has always been part of these islands’ sporting culture. The banter goes both ways, and that’s half the fun. If England win, English fans will celebrate like they’ve conquered the footballing universe. If they lose, millions of Scots will suddenly discover a lifelong affection for Congolese football, complete with imaginary family connections stretching back generations. 🌍🤣

So here’s to multicultural Scotland, proudly embracing international football one England opponent at a time. Long may the “support the underdog” tradition continue… at least until the next fixture list is announced. 🍿⚽
