The headlines would have you believe the entire nation ground to a halt for England’s latest football match. Politicians wrapped themselves in St George’s flags, TV presenters declared the country “united,” and social media was flooded with claims that “everyone” was watching.
Except… they weren’t.
With England’s population sitting at roughly 58.6 million, the reported audience of around 16 million viewers works out at just 27.3% of the population. That’s roughly one person in every four.
Which raises a rather awkward question…
🤔 So… Where Were All These Passionate Supporters?
If three out of every four people in England weren’t watching, where exactly was this mythical army of football fanatics we’re constantly told represents the whole country?
Were they mowing the lawn? Walking the dog? Watching Netflix? Reading a book? Blissfully unaware that television presenters were declaring it “the biggest night for the nation.”
Of course, the viewing figures include babies, young children and people without access to television, so the percentage of adults actually watching would be higher. But even allowing for that, it still falls a long way short of the impression that everyone was glued to the screen.
Yet every tournament we’re treated to the same script.
“It’s coming home!”
“The whole nation is behind them!”
“England comes together!”
Really?
Because the numbers suggest that millions simply carried on with their evening.
There’s absolutely nothing wrong with loving football. Support your team, celebrate the wins and suffer the losses—that’s what sport is all about. But perhaps it’s time broadcasters stopped pretending that every English person drops everything the moment England kick a ball.
Maybe the loudest supporters simply make the most noise.
🔥 Challenges 🔥
Do you think the media exaggerates England’s football fever? Were you one of the 27% watching, or one of the millions who couldn’t care less? ⚽🤷
Head over to the blog and tell us what you think. Are broadcasters creating the illusion that the entire nation is obsessed with football, or are the viewing figures still incredibly impressive?
