President Volodymyr Zelensky’s meeting with Prime Minister Andy Burnham is being presented as another show of the UK’s “unwavering support” for Ukraine. The message from Westminster couldn’t be clearer: the commitment remains firm, the backing continues, and the policy isn’t changing.
But here’s the question that never seems to get asked…
🗳️ Is “Unwavering” the Government’s Position… or the People’s?
Every government leader tells us support is unwavering. Every summit ends with another handshake, another pledge, another promise to stand shoulder-to-shoulder.
Yet when was the last time the British public was actually asked?
Not on social media.
Not through carefully selected soundbites.
Not via party conferences.
Asked properly.
Because if Britain is expected to bankroll long-term military commitments, increase defence spending and absorb the financial consequences, surely the people paying the taxes deserve a say.
Supporting Ukraine and pursuing peace don’t have to be opposing ideas. Most people would probably agree that defending a nation under attack and pushing relentlessly for negotiations should happen together—not one instead of the other.
💷 The £100 Billion Question… Whose Budget Is It?
The Government keeps telling us defence spending is rising. We’re told billions more will be spent protecting Britain and strengthening our Armed Forces.
But here’s a question every taxpayer should be asking:
Is the money being committed to Ukraine on top of Britain’s defence budget—or is it coming out of the very defence budget that was supposed to rebuild our own military?
If it’s extra funding, say so.
If it’s part of the existing defence budget, say so.
The public deserves transparency.
How much is being spent on supporting Ukraine?
How much is being spent on Britain’s own defence capabilities?
And how much is actually new money?
If the Government wants unwavering public support, perhaps it should start by giving unwavering answers.
