âď¸đOvernight, Donald Trump reportedly announced that Hamas has agreed to disarm and demilitarise Gaza under a deal that would eventually see a Palestinian technocratic government, overseen by a US-led âBoard of Peaceâ, take control of the territory.
If true, it would rank somewhere between âworld hunger solved by lunchtimeâ and âpoliticians voluntarily cutting their own salariesâ on the scale of astonishing announcements. Naturally, plenty of people are greeting the news with one carefully measured response:
âAnd pigs might fly.â đˇđ¨
đ Peace by Press Release?
History has a habit of laughing at grand declarations. Wars donât usually end because someone holds a press conference with enough confidence. Decades of bloodshed, ideology, revenge and mistrust rarely disappear overnight because a politician says, âJob done.â
Thatâs not to say peace is impossible. Everyone would welcome a genuine end to violence. But scepticism isnât cynicismâitâs what happens when youâve watched the same conflict produce more âhistoric breakthroughsâ than actual breakthroughs.
If this agreement really exists, the proof wonât be in the announcement. Itâll be in the weapons surrendered, the rockets that never launch, the hostages returned, the civilians protected, and the peace that actually lasts.
Until then, many observers will keep one eye on the headlines⌠and the other scanning the skies for airborne livestock. đâď¸
