🇬🇧🚪Andy Burnham is reportedly pushing for a new EU migration arrangement that could restore British access to criminal and asylum databases—while reopening the old question of who gets the final say when European courts, judges, and legal frameworks start creeping back into the national living room with muddy boots on.
Democracy, But Make It Optional
🗳️🤹♂️Imagine it. Years of arguments, votes, referendums, manifestos, slogans on buses, slogans off buses, endless panels of people shouting over each other—and then suddenly the political class strolls back in wearing a hi-vis jacket marked “Pragmatic Reset” and starts rewiring the constitution while everyone’s making a cup of tea.
“Don’t worry,” they say, which is always the political equivalent of hearing someone in a cockpit shout, “What does this button do?”
Access to criminal databases? Fine, that sounds sensible. Cooperation on asylum systems? Worth discussing. But then comes the familiar little velvet glove: outside judges, outside powers, outside influence—all wrapped up as a tidy administrative improvement.
And that’s the trick, isn’t it? Never call it surrender. Call it alignment. Never call it a reversal. Call it partnership. Never say “we’re handing powers back.” Say “modernising cross-border frameworks.” By the time the public works out what it means, there’s already a committee, a summit, a memorandum, and six officials with lanyards explaining why your vote was more of a historical mood board than a binding instruction.
You’d think we were in Russia—where democracy is apparently something you display in the window while the real decisions happen in the back office next to the shredder. 🇷🇺🗂️
The public gets the speech. The system gets the power. And somewhere in the middle, sovereignty is quietly bundled into a diplomatic suitcase marked “technical cooperation.”
🔥Challenges🔥
Is this sensible international cooperation—or Brexit being reversed one database, one court ruling, and one “reset” at a time?
