👻🗳️As the Alternative for Germany edges closer to leading its first German state government since the Second World War, the debate has once again become less about policy and more about history. To some, every conservative or nationalist movement is automatically a rerun of the 1930s. To others, constantly invoking the darkest chapter of German history has become a substitute for engaging with the issues driving voters today.
🏛️ History Is a Warning, Not a Time Machine
Germany isn’t 1933. There is no Gestapo kicking down doors. There are no state-organised roundups of Jewish citizens. The institutions, constitution, courts, and democratic safeguards that were built after the war exist precisely to prevent that nightmare from returning.
Yet the political conversation often feels trapped in a historical loop, where every disagreement is framed through the lens of the Nazi era. That doesn’t mean history should be forgotten—far from it. It means history should be understood, not used as a catch-all label for every modern political opponent.
Many Germans voting for AfD say their concerns revolve around immigration, economic pressures, energy policy, housing, and national identity. Whether others agree with those concerns or not, dismissing millions of voters as simply wanting to resurrect the Third Reich avoids addressing why support for the party has grown.
That said, it’s also true that parts of AfD have been criticised for extremist rhetoric, and some factions and individuals have been monitored by German domestic intelligence. Those concerns are part of the public debate and shouldn’t be ignored either. The challenge is to distinguish between legitimate criticism based on specific actions or statements and broad historical comparisons that can obscure more than they reveal.

Is Germany having an honest conversation about its future—or is every political disagreement destined to become another argument about its past? 🤔
