Whether people voted for it or not, the next three weeks could see what feels to some like the coronation of “King Andy Burnham.” Not because the public demanded it, but because the political machine appears to be rolling forward regardless. 🚂👑
The familiar refrain will be that everything is perfectly legal, entirely proper, and conducted “within the rules.” Of course it is. The people making the decisions are also the people who wrote the rulebook. Funny how that works. 📜😉
So who exactly decided this was the right path? That’s the question many people are asking. The answers often seem wrapped in committees, consultations, procedures and political jargon until nobody can quite pin down who is actually accountable. 🤷♂️
Democracy is supposed to be about the people having the final say. Yet sometimes it can feel like the public are merely spectators, invited to applaud once the outcome has already been arranged. 🎭
None of this means laws have been broken. It does, however, raise a bigger question: does something being legal automatically make it democratic? Those aren’t always the same thing.
If democracy is more than simply following procedures, where should the public draw the line? Do you believe political appointments and leadership changes genuinely reflect the will of the people, or has politics become a game played by insiders for insiders?
