For years, the easy dismissal was that HarmonyOS was basically Android wearing a Huawei moustache. 🥸 That argument becomes considerably harder to make with HarmonyOS NEXT.

Huawei has been constructing its own native application environment and persuading developers—particularly in China—to come along for the ride. Whatever you think of Huawei, that’s a substantial engineering undertaking. Building an operating system is difficult. Building an operating system people actually have applications for is where the headache reaches industrial strength. 💊💻

And Huawei has one enormous advantage: it makes an absurd amount of the surrounding hardware.

Phones talk to tablets. Tablets cooperate with PCs. Watches join the conversation. TVs get involved. Before long, your toaster will probably be forwarding a spreadsheet to your smartwatch while the fridge complains about battery optimisation. ⌚📺🖥️

That hardware-software control allows Huawei to concentrate on slick animations, power management, cross-device communication and applications that can adapt across different displays.

Inside China, that can make HarmonyOS genuinely compelling rather than merely an ideological Android alternative. Huawei isn’t simply trying to make another phone OS; it’s trying to make the operating system disappear into an ecosystem of interconnected devices.

The real challenge is what happens outside Huawei’s home turf. 🌍 An operating system can be technically magnificent, but consumers ultimately want their favourite apps, services and accessories to work without consulting a compatibility spreadsheet and sacrificing a goat beneath the full moon. 🐐🌕

Apple and Google have spent years building enormous developer ecosystems. Huawei now has to demonstrate that engineering independence can become ecosystem independence too.

Here’s the question worth arguing about: has Huawei genuinely created the foundations of a third major mobile ecosystem, or has it built an impressive technological fortress whose strength depends heavily on China? 👀

The engineering achievement is difficult to dismiss. The global ecosystem question is much harder.
