⛽🔥🚗What impeccable timing. Just as millions of motorists prepare to clog Britain’s roads for one of the biggest motoring weekends in years, petrol prices have reportedly climbed to a four-year high.

Because apparently nothing says “Bank Holiday getaway” quite like staring at a fuel pump wondering whether you should fill the tank or remortgage the shed. 💷⛽

And this isn’t just another weary tale of “global oil prices, nothing to see here.” The competition watchdog is already asking whether motorists are seeing wholesale price reductions passed on quickly enough.

That raises the question drivers have been asking for years:

Why do pump prices seem to have a Formula One engine when costs rise — but a shopping trolley wheel when they fall?

Wholesale fuel gets more expensive?

WHOOSH. 🚀

Before you’ve finished saying “Brent crude,” the numbers on the forecourt sign appear to have developed Olympic sprinting ability.

Wholesale prices drop?

Suddenly everyone needs a meeting.

Then another meeting.

Then perhaps a strongly worded spreadsheet. 📊

And eventually, several geological eras later, someone knocks half a penny off unleaded and expects motorists to organise a parade.

It would almost be impressive if we weren’t the ones paying for it.

There’s another awkward little detail too: reports suggest drivers can sometimes find petrol around 10p per litre cheaper simply by shopping around locally.

Ten pence might not sound dramatic until you put it into an actual fuel tank.

For a typical 55-litre fill-up, that’s £5.50.

Every. Single. Tank.

That’s not loose change rolling around beneath the passenger seat. Over repeated fill-ups, it becomes real household money disappearing into an industry where neighbouring forecourts can apparently inhabit completely different economic universes.

One station says: “Global markets, mate.”

Another one two miles down the road says: “That’ll be £5.50 less, please.”

Interesting. 🤔

Which is why motorists are entitled to ask whether every price increase really is the unavoidable hand of international economics — or whether the British driver has simply become the nation’s favourite mobile cash machine.

🔥 Challenges🔥

Twenty million journeys. Petrol at a four-year high. Wholesale prices moving up and down. And motorists once again wondering why reductions seem to travel through the system wearing concrete boots.

So here’s the question:

Have you noticed petrol prices shooting up faster than they come back down? And how much difference is there between forecourts where you live?
