🗳️🎪The Clacton by-election should have been a democratic contest. Instead, the major parties treated it like a dodgy kebab at 2am: avoided, sniffed at, and left for someone else to deal with. Labour, the Conservatives, the Lib Dems and Greens reportedly chose not to stand, calling it a stunt or circus — which is handy, because nothing says “serious politics” like refusing to enter the ring and then complaining about who won it. 

The Bin, The Boycott, and the Big Brave Vanishing Act

🗑️👻So the media tried to dress it up as Farage versus Count Binface, because apparently British politics has now fully evolved into a seaside panto with ballot papers. Yes, Count Binface came second. Yes, that is objectively hilarious. But the bigger story is that the so-called grown-up parties didn’t even bother putting on their school shoes and showing up.

They called it a “media circus,” then left the tent empty enough for a man with a bin on his head to become the main challenger. That’s not moral superiority. That’s political stage fright wearing a sensible blazer.

And then came the second outrage: Farage didn’t turn up to the count after citing security concerns. Cue the media clutching pearls so hard they nearly formed diamonds. Police warnings, disputed details, “credible threat,” “not credible enough,” “why wasn’t he there?” — suddenly everyone who mocked the contest wanted a grand ceremonial trophy-lift like it was the FA Cup Final of Democracy. 

But let’s not pretend this was just about a bin. The bin was the mascot. The real rubbish was the political cowardice. If Reform are supposedly so ridiculous, so beatable, so unserious — why not beat them? Why not stand a candidate and let voters decide? Instead, the big parties gave Clacton a lecture from a safe distance and then acted shocked when the people in the room voted for the person actually in the room.

That’s not democracy flexing its muscles. That’s democracy hiding in the toilet until the awkward bit is over. 🚽🇬🇧
