Imagine a political protest producing 636 arrests in a weekend, police recovering 68 weapons, hundreds of people being intercepted before they even reached the main event, and knife assaults taking place among the crowds.
Would the headlines call it a vibrant celebration?
Would commentators patiently remind us that the overwhelming majority behaved themselves?
Or would television studios spontaneously combust while politicians competed to see who could say “RIGHT-WING EXTREMIST GATHERING” the loudest? 📺🔥
That is the uncomfortable question raised by the policing figures surrounding Notting Hill Carnival.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed 636 arrests during its 2026 Carnival operation — 242 on Sunday and 394 on Monday. Of those, 193 took place on the approaches rather than inside the event itself. Police also recovered 68 weapons. Two knife assaults were reported, neither causing life-threatening injuries.
And this isn’t some freak statistical hiccup.
Later consolidated figures for previous years recorded 355 arrests, 112 reported assaults and six knife-crime incidents in 2024, followed by 528 arrests and four reported stabbing or slashing incidents in 2025.
So let’s conduct a little thought experiment. 🧪
🚨 Swap the Steel Drums for Placards and Watch the Vocabulary Change
Imagine those figures attached to a demonstration involving people the political and media establishment had already decided were on the wrong side of respectable opinion.
636 arrests.
68 weapons recovered.
Sexual offences, violence, assaults, weapons and public-order offences appearing in the policing picture.
Would we still be hearing that the crimes represented only a minority of those attending?
Or would we be treated to helicopter footage, emergency studio panels and dramatic graphics screaming:
“RIGHT-WING EXTREMISTS DESCEND ON LONDON” 🚁📢
Would the media be saying “mostly peaceful”?
Or would your television screen be covered in the words RIGHT-WING THUGS, FAR-RIGHT EXTREMISTS and THREAT TO PUBLIC SAFETY, with Tommy Robinson somehow dragged into the conversation before breakfast? 📺🔥
